Mission Shawnee Update

Feeding children during the months of June and July is the first of several ministries scheduled to take place through mission Shawnee.

For a period of three years beginning in 2000, Oklahoma led the nation in two categories: actual hunger and hunger insecurity. In Shawnee, 80% of school children qualify for free or reduced cost lunches. Unfortunately, those lunches are not served during the summer months. Many children return to school undernourished.

Mission Shawnee is a new ministry comprised of several churches in the Shawnee area working in conjunction with Good Shepherd Chapel to address the hunger situation in our community. On June 5th, Mission Shawnee began serving lunches in several locations in the Shawnee area to a number of children each weekday.

Many children today may also be deprived in at least one other way: They may be growing up without the opportunity to know Jesus. Mission Shawnee is equipped to address this problem as well. Every day as a nutritious lunch is served the children will hear one of a series of 40 Bible stories.

Feeding children during the months of June and July is the first of several ministries scheduled to take place through mission Shawnee. Others will include apartment ministries, a food pantry and clothes closet, and help with rent, utilities, and job training. In all these programs, the ultimate goal is to share the love of Christ.

If you are interested in helping this ministry by cooking, serving, driving a van, or simply visiting with children, please visit the Mission Shawnee Contacts Page. Also, and most importantly, would you please pray for this new ministry?

Kris Steele is the Associate Minister at Wesley United Methodist Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
