Below are Phyllis’ comments and responses regarding the District Leadership Conference that was held at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Oklahoma City.

Empowering vs Enabling

What were the main points your teacher tried to make?
We need to help people find solutions instead of solving their problems.
Do not take on other peoples problems nor fix their problems for them.  Help them find the tools or resources to find a solution themselves.  Sometimes we need to let people hit bottom before they will decide to fix their problems.

What notes did you jot down that seemed important?
We can not fix someone else nor do their work for them in order to fix them. It is up to them to make the choice to change.

What points seemed relevant to Wesley in Shawnee?
We need to encourage every person to do the work that they need to for the church and not be an enabler by taking up the slack if they fall down. They need to be the one who suffers the consequences.

Which workshop did you attend?
Trustees

What were the main points your teacher tried to make?
We need to be incorporated.
The trustees are the ones responsible for all gifts to the church monetary or otherwise. We can decline a gift if it is not appropriate for our church.  (Old mattresses, old pianos, financial gifts with strings attached that we are not willing to accept)

What notes did you jot down that seemed important?
The trustees are responsible for doing a yearly walk through of the church to see what needs to be fixed or improved.  As a member of the Trustees, I feel that we do a good job of looking at these items on an on-going basis.

What points seemed relevant to Wesley in Shawnee?
We need to get the long-term planning committee in place so we know the direction the church is going and can spend our money (or save it for projects) accordingly.
