God's Righteousness

The righteousness He requires is the righteousness His righteousness requires Him to require

I saw this on a t shirt last week.  I had to read it several times to understand, but it is a wonderful truth.  Many people have heard this before, but when I quoted it in Sunday School, nobody had heard it.

Since God is absolutely righteous, He can settle for nothing less.  God cannot simply forgive our sin because He loves us.  If this were the case, He would not be righteous.  This is one reason that Christ had to die, and this is the reason that God turned His back on His Son when He was on the cross.  God took our sin and through imputation He placed our ugliness on Christ and poured out His wrath on Him.  The sin had to be punished, and Christ took the punishment for us.

That is a good turn of phrase, and precisely accurate.

I prefer Chris Rice's summation of the need for the cross: "somtimes love has to drive a nail into its own hand."
